Suggestions for the bas-relief
A tent peg and guideline could be used as a nod to the soldiers time spent sleeping under Canvas during training.
I have seen several photos where the Men have surround their campsites with whitewashed river stones, sometimes creating elaborate mosaics with the rocks to form flags, crowns and words. Maybe reproducing one of these stone garden mosaics (albeit scaled down) would be an interesting element to incorporate on the sculptures. (There’d be a certain circular irony to feature the trainees stone sculptures on the memorial sculpture.)
