    Suggestions for the bas-relief

It seems to me that the strong relationship between Town and Camp during WW1 finds no better expression than in the tale of the ‘Little Cobbler’, Mr F Rutherford, who took it upon himself to lead many of the recruits through the town and up over the hill to Trentham. It would seem his enthusiasm for the troops was reciprocated in kind by the those leaving for the front, adopting him as they did, their mascot. As to how his memory might be best represented on the sculpture and rendered on the bas-relief, I couldn’t say. (I’ll leave that entirely to minds far more artistic than mine.)
